Projects

Historic St. Mary’s City has sponsored archaeological investigations within the St. Mary’s City National Historic Landmark since 1969 (read more about the history of Archaeology at HSMC). These projects are typically conducted for one of two reasons:

  1. to inform the creation of a new museum exhibit or
  2. to investigate an area of the National Historic Landmark that is scheduled to be disturbed by modern construction (this is called archaeological mitigation).

We invite you to dig into some of the archaeological discoveries HSMC has made. The projects highlighted below represent just a sample of the years of work carried out by HSMC staff. The results of these projects and the many hours spent behind the scenes are reflected in the museum’s exhibits, programs, and publications. Keep checking back – there’s always more to discover!
