A new chapter begins at Historic St. Mary’s City.
This November, visitors will be among the first to experience our brand-new Visitor Center, a state-of-the-art gateway to Maryland’s first capital. Designed to welcome students, families, travelers, history enthusiasts, and lifelong learners, the new center brings together immersive exhibits, interactive media, and personal stories that connect the past to the present.
As we prepare for a formal Grand Opening celebration in Spring 2027, the public is welcome inside on November 14th for our inaugural season to get an early look inside.
A Sneak Peek Inside
The new Visitor Center tells the story of the people, events, and ideas that shaped Maryland and helped influence the nation.
Visitors will explore:
- The origins of religious freedom in Maryland
- The development of representative government
- Stories of self-determination and community
- Indigenous history developed in collaboration with Piscataway leadership
- The lives and contributions of enslaved and free African Americans
- Archaeological discoveries that continue to reveal new insights about the past
Through engaging exhibits, interactive technology, and community-informed storytelling, visitors will encounter the many voices that shaped St. Mary’s City and continue to influence our understanding of history today.
Built Through Collaboration
The new Visitor Center reflects years of planning, research, and partnership.
Exhibits were developed alongside tribal leaders, historians, educators, and community organizations to ensure a more complete and inclusive interpretation of Maryland’s past. This collaborative approach places multiple perspectives at the center of the visitor experience and highlights stories that have too often been overlooked.
The result is a welcoming space where history is explored through scholarship, archaeology, lived experiences, and community voices.
