Historic St. Mary’s City is offering four different workshops designed for homeschool families with interpretive discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.

Corn and the Colonial Diet
10:30 a.m.—12:00 p.m.
Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation. 47621 Old Cove Road. Lexington Park, MD (GPS)
Designed for ages 6 and older
Have you ever wondered what the colonists ate and why? Come visit the plantation and learn the importance of corn in the colonial diet and the native people’s influence on foodways and agriculture in the 17th-century Chesapeake region. Students will learn how corn was processed and make three unique corn dishes using traditional tools and hearth cooking techniques.
Deckhand Operations
10:30 a.m.—12:00 p.m.
Waterfront and Maryland Dove
Designed for ages 9 and older
Deckhands fulfill the essential duties to running a ship. Participants of this workshop will explore the daily routine and learn the tasks associated with the role of a deckhand. Through discussion and hands-on activities, students will focus on the key jobs that allow the ship’s crew to work efficiently. Students will test their new skills with an interactive relay game with their shipmates.
Law and Disorder
1:00 —2:30 p.m.
Town Center.
Designed for ages 6 & older
It is a new season with a new crime and only you can solve the mystery! Participants of this workshop will learn about crime, punishment, and justice in 17th-century Maryland and put their critical thinking skills to work. Students will interview suspects; piece together clues and help bring a criminal to justice in this unique workshop!
Eastern Woodland Games
1:00—2:30 p.m.
Woodland Indian Hamlet
Designed for ages 6 and older
Games have been an important part of Native American culture used to bring people together and strengthen community values. Many games also played a role in the education of children by helping them to develop skills that were necessary to be successful adults. Participants of this workshop will join the Hamlet staff as they explore the variations of woodland games played throughout time and still played today. This workshop includes interpretive discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
