Historic St. Mary’s City is offering four different workshops designed for homeschool families with interpretive discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.

Cargo: What, Where, Why, and How

Waterfront
How were goods transported from England to early Maryland’s shores without being damaged or lost? How do you maximize storage space aboard a tall ship? During this hands-on workshop students will learn what cargo is, how it was moved in the 17th century, and the rigors that came with the challenge of delivering cargo to shore. Hint- it will require both muscle and mechanical advantage!
Ages 8 and up.
Hook, Line, and Sinker: Fishing in 17th Century Maryland

Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation
Fishing has played a large role in Maryland’s culture and history for thousands of years. Join us at the plantation to learn how early Maryland colonial settlers constructed fishing implements, used them, and cooked the fish they caught. Make comparisons to native fishing methods and try your hand at hooking and cooking your catch.

Experimental Archaeology ARTventure
1:00 – 2:30 p.m.
Woodland Indian Hamlet
Join Historic St. Mary’s City staff at the Woodland Indian Hamlet as we add more color(s) to our interpretive collection. Using experimental archaeology, students will explore historical sources and the natural world to experiment with painting materials. April 17 Ages 5 to 8

Full STEM Ahead!: Science Through the Ages
1:00 – 2:30 p.m.
Town Center
Travel back to the Age of Discovery and take part in scientific experiments! These experiments will reveal to students the contributions made by early scientific thinkers such as Galileo and Sir Isaac Newton. Use the scientific method and join many scientists who impacted history by questioning the world around them.
