Fire Making Workshop

Ages 13–18 | $20 per participant / $15 for members (includes free admission for one adult)
Preregistration required | Registration opens October 1
Learn how to spark a flame and keep it burning in this hands-on workshop designed just for teens. Our Tobacco Plantation staff will guide you through traditional friction-based fire starting, striking flint and steel, and using modern methods—then put your new skills to the test.
And because every good fire deserves a reward, we’ll finish the morning by roasting marshmallows and building gooey, chocolatey s’mores over the fire you helped create. You’ll leave with both a new life skill and a full stomach.
What to expect:
- Gathering natural materials
- Practicing multiple fire-making techniques
- Outdoor learning in crisp fall weather—dress accordingly
- All materials (including s’mores fixings!) provided
If the program is canceled due to weather or staffing, all participants will receive a full refund. This is a fun, tasty, and practical way to spend a fall morning at Historic St. Mary’s City.
-This program is ideal for adventurous learners interested in history, nature, or wilderness skills.
