Meet Jumbles & Rosie – the newest (and cutest) members of Historic St. Mary’s City!
These Red Devon calves are more than just irresistibly adorable—they’re living history.

In the 1600s, colonists didn’t call them “heritage breeds”—they just called them essential. Red Devons were prized for their versatility: used for dairy or beef. Farmers raised them based on need, not specialization. Unlike modern cattle bred for a single purpose, Red Devons were jacks of all trades—and that’s exactly why they were so valuable in early Maryland.

Today, Red Devons are rare in modern agriculture but recognized for their historical significance and resilience. When you meet Jumbles and Rosie at Historic St. Mary’s City, you’re meeting the same kind of livestock that helped build Maryland’s first capital.

But even heritage cows need hay, vet care, and cozy stalls.

That’s where you come in. Your support helps us care for these gentle ambassadors and ensures that their story continues at our Plantation exhibit.

Donate today and become part of the herd!

Support the care and keeping of our living history—because heritage deserves heart.
