Cream of the Crop – Dairying in 17th Century Maryland
10:30 a.m.—12:00 p.m.
Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation. 47621 Old Cove Road. Lexington Park, MD (GPS)
Have you ever wondered how cheese and butter are made? This workshop will offer students an in-depth look at dairying—specifically churning butter and making cheese. “Cream of the Crop” will include a brief overview of the history of cows in the colony, as well as discussions on heritage breeds, including the Red Devon cows that reside here at the museum. Students will learn about roles of people on the plantation, including the importance of women in dairying. Participants will have an opportunity to feed cows, churn butter, and make a soft farmer’s cheese using 17th century methods.

Pigs have come up missing all over St. Mary’s City and only you can solve the crime!
Participants of this workshop will learn about crime, punishment, and justice in 17th century Maryland and put their critical thinking skills to work. Students will interview suspects; piece together clues and help bring a criminal to justice in this unique workshop!
Eastern Woodland Music

Woodland Indian Hamlet
Join the Woodland Indian Hamlet in song this spring! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the basic concepts of music and will explore the music and instruments of the Eastern Woodland people. Participants will also create a unique instrument used historically by people all over the world.
Flourishing Flags
10:30 a.m.—12:00 p.m.
Waterfront and Maryland Dove
Until recent times, flags were the only way ships could communicate with each other at sea. This workshop will dive a little deeper into the various uses of flags aboard ships and how they were used to communicate. Through discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities students will learn and explore the different elements in the construction of flags and will have the opportunity to design and make their own personal flags.
