Hide Tanning Workshop

October 10, 2026 | 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Ages 14+ | $25 per person / $15 for members
Registration opens August 31
Meet at the Visitor Center | Advance registration and full payment required

Join the staff of the Woodland Indian Hamlet for a day of tanning. Learn the basics on how the first people of Maryland turned the skins of deer into usable and valuable materials. This workshop is for beginners and offers a hands-on experience with the steps required to tan a hide. Techniques developed by the staff will be introduced using both modern and period tools. Note: should the full-day workshop not allow enough time for a participant to fully tan their individual hide, thorough instructions on how to finish at home will be provided.

Perfect for those interested in primitive skills, historical lifeways, or hands-on experiences, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past in a meaningful and tactile way. All materials provided. Space is limited—register early!
