Traditional Trades Workshop

First Iron Pour in over 350 Years at the Site of a 17th-Century Iron Bloomery

Historic St. Mary’s City is launching a program in Traditional Metal Arts with a molten iron pour.  Over 50 custom stanchions for the Croton Engineerium Museum will be cast using a nose tilt crucible furnace.  Over 800 pounds of 3,000° molten metal will be poured into resin-bonded sand molds.  The pour will be led by foundry master Phillip Harrison of Penumbra Design.

Modern technology and ancient process come together.  Casting has its roots in Mesopotamia around 3000 B.C.  Sculpturers, historic trades, metal workers, casting, and other makers, come observe this fascinating process.

Novice, or master, you are welcome.  Bring your camera.  Attendance is free.  Registration is required.  Contact the Visitor Center at (240) 895-4990, or info@HSMCdigshistory.org.

This program will meet at the Artisan Shop, next door to the Visitor Center.

Historic St. Mary’s City would like to thank those who have supported our efforts to preserve traditional trades:
